Associate

Contract Term: Full time/Permanent

Location: Edinburgh

Closing date: 31st of May 2019

Salary: Competitive

We are looking for a passionate, flexible and motivated individual with strong analytical problem solving, commercial project management and communication skills to join the Carbon Trust's small and growing team in Edinburgh.

The candidate should have an understanding of renewable energy generation, ideally in offshore wind in particular, and at least some knowledge of energy efficiency and carbon reduction in the built/urban environment. The Associate will be expected to apply a high degree of independence and initiative in delivering high quality work. It is expected that from time to time the Associate will attend project meetings in London and/or in European countries, and possibly occasionally further afield. All such travel is likely to involve staying away overnight.

The role, based in our office in central Edinburgh, is part of the Carbon Trust's Programmes and Innovation team, working with colleagues in the following three areas:

• offshore wind technology innovation;
• strategic carbon reduction and
• energy efficiency.

This Associate role provides an unrivalled opportunity to initiate and manage cutting-edge RD&D projects, identifying opportunities facing innovative low carbon technology companies and build interesting and diverse networks across government, technical specialists, research institutes, entrepreneurs and investors.

Alongside this, you will also have the opportunity to work with colleagues, external partners, policy makers and practitioners in Scotland, elsewhere in the UK and in other countries, who are working to develop and deliver strategies, plans, financing and implementation of large scale carbon reduction in cities and regions. This includes the application of energy efficiency measures in buildings, the public realm, industry and transport, as well as understanding the carbon emissions and reduction potential associated with areas such as local energy (including heat) generation and distribution, human behaviour, consumption and waste management, and water provision and efficiency.

A significant proportion of your time in this role will be spent working with the Carbon Trust's offshore wind (OSW) team and its external partners to support the initiation, set-up and management of large-scale Joint Industry Projects (JIPs). Additional activities are likely to include supporting strategic planning programmes with government (at national and subnational levels, in Scotland, the UK more widely and overseas) focused on delivering transformational carbon reduction, particularly through energy efficiency measures at scale.

The Carbon Trust OSW team manages the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA), a collaborative joint industry research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme with nine major international energy companies. The overarching aim of this initiative is to reduce the cost of energy through the accelerated development and commercialisation of innovative technologies. Within each year, a number of JIPs are realised under the umbrella of the OWA.

About us:

The Carbon Trust is a not-for-dividend company with the mission to accelerate the move to a sustainable, low carbon economy. We have a unique track record of working in partnership with government, private and public sectors. We are independent experts on carbon reduction and resource efficiency, who reinvest surpluses from group commercial activities into our mission.

The Carbon Trust provides innovative advice to governments and businesses around the world to support the global transition to a low carbon economy. We work closely with decision makers and implementers in key institutions in the UK and across multiple emerging and developing countries on low-carbon finance, programmes, policy and technology.

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Initiation and setup of Joint Industry Projects related to Offshore Wind

o Assisting in the development and maturation of project scopes and business cases for JIPs, in close cooperation with industry and other stakeholders;
o Facilitation of scope reviews with international experts;
o Communication with technology innovators, suppliers, research institutes, certification bodies and other stakeholders which are or may be relevant in relation to a JIP that is set up under the OWA programme;
o Assisting in creating the contractual basis for JIPs, together with Carbon Trust's OSW team and its legal advisors;
o Presenting JIP opportunities to the members of the OWA programme and to other industry stakeholders;
o Supporting Carbon Trust's OSW team in the development of project proposals to be submitted to national and international funding calls;
o Engagement with industry key players, representing the Carbon Trust at meetings and other relevant internal and external events;
o Keeping abreast of RD&D activities more widely in the sector and collaborating with other project managers on areas of interface between different areas of research.

• Management of Joint Industry Projects related to Offshore Wind

o Assisting Carbon Trust's OSW team in the supervision, management and administration of large-scale RD&D projects;
o Participation in meetings and workshops that are related to JIPs;
o Providing regular project updates to the OWA Steering Committee;
o Managing changes to project scopes, risks and stakeholder relations.

• Contribute to technical assistance projects in climate change mitigation and climate action planning

o Supporting research, analysis and report writing for technical assistance projects with external client beneficiary and funder organisations;
o Developing and applying existing and new methods and tools to help client organisations to assess, quantify and reduce their carbon emissions and climate change risks;
o Supporting the identification, quantification and development of potential carbon reduction opportunities (including energy efficiency in buildings and operational activities, renewable energy generation, waste reduction, travel and transport efficiency);
o Supporting colleagues in writing proposals and bids for delivering new technical assistance projects in climate change mitigation and climate action planning.

Key skills we are looking for:

Required

• Good problem solving skills;
• Good interpersonal and influencing skills;
• Strong communication skills (written and oral);
• Project management skills;
• Ability to work effectively and flexibly in a team environment;
• Ability to manage a variety of concurrent tasks and respond to different and sometimes conflicting priorities;
• Ability to work on a standalone basis;
• Numerate and IT-literate with Microsoft Office software.

Desired

• Technical knowledge and experience related to offshore wind, renewables, energy efficiency and/or relevant industry;

Qualifications and experience:

Required:

• Degree educated (or equivalent), ideally in an engineering or other relevant technical discipline;
• Project management experience;
• Some experience in contract management and procurement processes;
• Ambition and passion to drive the development of the offshore wind industry;
• Ambition and passion to contribute to the development and implementation of climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and plans by large organisations, particularly in the public sector.

Desired:

• Experience in the renewable energy industry;
• Experience in commercialising technology innovations;
• Experience in delivering energy efficiency assessments and advice, ideally in the public/government sector;
• Appreciation of the fundamentals of project finance and the key metrics required for a business case;
• Understanding of the principles and methodology of carbon footprinting for organisations and at a community level.

Salary & Benefits:

We offer a competitive salary and a performance based bonus. Our hours are 37.5 per week with 28 days paid holiday plus bank holidays and a generous pension scheme.

Our Edinburgh office is near Edinburgh's Haymarket station. We offer travel card loans, a cycle to work scheme, company away days and a 24-hour Employee Assistance Helpline.
