The region of Renfrewshire which borders Glasgow and North Ayrshire has a population of around 170,000 people with the working population of around 82,000, with the major urban towns of Paisley, Linwood, Greenock and Johnstone.The unemployement rate in Renfrewshire as a whole is 5.8%

The traditional industries of Paisley were varied and diverse with the textile industry playing a major role in the regions economy along with Shipbuilding on the River Clyde at Renfrew and Port Glasgow too, sugar refining in the area was a large employer as well. Car manufacturing was an important employer late into the 20th century before it's demise along with all other traditional industries across Scotland.

The major employment sectors today in Renfrewshire are also varied in keeping with it's past.The local authorities of East Renfrewshire, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde councils are the largest employers along with NHS Renfrewshire. Other leading industry sectors include the service and technological industries. Leading technology companies such as EE and IBM have large call centres located in the region along with other contact centres operated by Webhelp and Teleperformance, employing permanent staff on full and part time basis. Engineering and manufacturing too are important to the region with most notably with the internationally renowned engineering and power company Doosan Babcock employing over 5000 people. Other sectors of note include transport with companies such as Mcgills Bus company and expanding operator and communications, hospitality, finance and tourism.
