Midlothian Jobs - Find jobs in Midlothian

Midlothian is situated on the borders Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders with a population of around 82,000, with the main population centres of Bonnyrigg,Penicuik and Dalkeith.

Historically Midlothian was one of the cornerstones of the UK coal mining boasting at one time around 26 mines and 11,000 employed in the industry. With the continous demise of this deep cast industry throughout the UK, the final deepcoal mine closed in Midlothian in 1998. In 2013 however the go ahead was given for an open cast facility at Cauldhall Moor to mine around 10 million tonnes of coal.

Despite this tenous link to it's past, Midlothian has re-invented itself with regards employment and jobs, affected by the economic downturn of 2009/10, the regionis now a diverse and vibrant.

The largest Public secror employers in the region are the  Midlothian Council employing around 4500 staff  which provides services to the region (from social care, education, infastructure and finance) and the Scottish Qualifications Authority which employs many hundreds.

Notably though, some of the other largest employers in the region are from the private sector across different industry specialisms. They include furniture retailer IKEA, building and construction support services group Arthur Mackay, Dobbies Garden World, engineering company MacTaggart Scott & Co and the animal sciences research centre the Roslin Institute, diary maker Letts Filofax

Tourism too is a sector experiencing growth. One of the pivotal reasons is because of the increase in visitor numbers to Rosslyn Chapel, in the village of Roslin in the region, after it was featured in the global success of the Dan Brown book and film The Da Vinci Code.

With this mix of industries and job opportunities Midlothian is not being overshadowed by it's neighbours and offers the job seeker a variety of opportunities.
