Argyll and Bute is located in the North West Coast of Scotland is largely a rural area .Its population is is around 91,000 ,with around 50,000 off employment age.The largest towns include Helensburgh to the south and Dunoon and Lochgilphead further North. The region due to it's wide land mass of over 6,000 square miles and smaller comparative population is largely rural. Historically the regions industries were fishing, farming and some heavy industries including iron smelting. Tourism because of its scenic beauty also grew and remains to this day an important employer across Argyll and Bute.

Locations such as Oban, Islands of Islay an Jura continue to attract thousands of visitors each year due to their scenic beauty and their importance as major world renowned whisky producers with distilleries and visitor centres.

Tourism on the whole is a seasonal employer for the region with peak employment in the summer months. Permanent employment comes from varied industries and sectors. Public administration is the biggest supplier of jobs. Argyll and Bute council and NHS Highland are the largest employers. At Faslane and Coulport on the River Clyde the the MOD -Ministry of Defence -has two naval bases which are the UK's largest, it has been suggested that they provide around 12,000 jobs to the local economy with civilian and military personnel connected to the base.

The region too has a strong service sector such as finance and retail. Glasgow based Webhelp UK for example has a contact centre on Dunoon employing over 220 permanent call service staff. Distribution and transport are key employers too, largely due to Argyll and Bute's relative remoteness and spread and need for strong logistical suppliers and connections.
