A career in Landscaping and Gardening Services
Pat of Harper Garden Services gives us the lowdown on his career and sector
Tell us about your business Pat?
Harper garden services is a family run business who first opened their doors in 2016. We offer a large range of landscaping and gardening services. We specialise in garden timber work such as fencing, decking and pagola to name a few.
Did you become a landscaper on leaving school?
I have been cutting grass since I was 14 years old. This started as a part time summer job. After leaving school, I qualified as a level 4 advanced craft carpenter. As a carpenter I have travelled across the world and have gained experience on different aspects on building. I have come to realise working indoors was not for me and returned to my roots (excuse the pun!!).
Did you have any formal training within this industry?
I gained experience in landscaping from working with MacColl Landscaping for 10 years. Working with a young company was a fantastic base which gave opportunities to gain experience and using transferable skills in other areas out with carpentry such as drainage, laying block drive ways, sandstone and precast slab laying, artificial lawns as well as developing an eye for garden structure and lay out.
Which area of Scotland do you most carry out your business?
I work in all areas of Glasgow. However the majority of my client base is in the West of Glasgow.
What is a normal day for you in the peak season?
I find it easier to split my week into two halves by doing landscaping jobs Monday through to Wednesday. On a Thursday and Friday I work on my garden maintenance contracts.
A typical day is from 7.30am- 5.00pm.
